Free credit report dispute letter

Written in your browser. Nothing is sent or saved.

This sample asks Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion to check an item you believe is wrong. Those are United States bureaus, and other countries use different agencies and laws. The letter cannot force deletion of something that is accurate. If the late payment is accurate, that is a goodwill letter to the creditor, not this letter. After the investigation window, a follow-up letter is on this page; a CFPB complaint is a separate form this site does not file. Confirm the mailing address before you send it.

Re: Request for reinvestigation of inaccurate information — FCRA §611 (15 U.S.C. §1681i)

To whom it may concern:

I dispute the accuracy of information in my credit file. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, 15 U.S.C. §1681i, a consumer reporting agency must reinvestigate information a consumer reports as inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable.

Account name:
Account number (last 4):
Reason: Inaccurate balance

What I believe is wrong:
See the reason above.

Please forward this dispute, including the information I supplied, to the furnisher, complete the reinvestigation, and send me the results in writing. If you need a description of the procedure you used, I request it under 15 U.S.C. §1681i(a)(7).

I am not asking you to remove information that is accurate and verifiable. I am asking you to follow the reinvestigation procedure the statute requires.

Sincerely,

Before you send it

  • Send via USPS Certified Mail, Return Receipt.
  • Keep a copy of the letter and every enclosure.
  • Send copies, not originals, of any supporting documents.
  • Use the identifying information on your credit report so the bureau can match the file.
  • Count the investigation window from the bureau’s receipt, not from the date on the letter.

If 30 days have passed

  • Wait for the bureau’s written results. The investigation window is generally 30 days from receipt, not from the date on this letter.
  • If they did not finish, or they verified an item you still believe is wrong, you can send a complaint to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
  • Use consumerfinance.gov/complaint. This site does not file that complaint for you.
  • A CFPB complaint is not a second dispute letter and not an order to delete an accurate item.
